The Strandzha Plateau is part of an extensive medium-altitude mountain range in southeastern Bulgaria that extends into the European territory of Turkey. In Bulgaria, the range is characterized by gentle, heavily forested hills, with the Gradishte peak being the highest point on the Bulgarian side at 710 meters. Geologically, the area is composed of a diverse mix of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Strandzha is famous for its unique flora, notably the Pontic Rhododendron, a Tertiary-era relict species that flourishes in the dense beech and oak forests. Established in 1995, the Strandzha Nature Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria, preserving an exceptional ecosystem with high biodiversity. Historically, the region is rich in Thracian sanctuaries and archaeological sites such as Mishkova Niva. A notable cultural tradition is Nestinarstvo, a ritual fire-walking dance that is part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its secluded border location has helped preserve many ancient traditions and a largely untouched natural environment.

The regional terrain is characterized by broad, gently undulating forested hills rather than sharp, rocky alpine inclines. Dirt roads and rough logging tracks form the primary routing, which can quickly become exceptionally slippery when wet.
