Shiroka Laka (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Shiroka Laka is an architectural gem in the Rhodope Mountains, known for its well-preserved houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period. The village has been declared an architectural and folklore reserve, preserving the authentic spirit of the mountain region. The characteristic two-story houses with white facades, dark wooden beams, and stone roofs nestle closely to the steep slopes along the river. The village is nationwide famous for its musical tradition. It is home to the National School of Folklore Arts, where the art of the Kaba Gaida (the deep-sounding Rhodope bagpipe) is taught. Every year on the first Sunday of March, the 'Pesponedelnik' Kukeri festival takes place, featuring masked men in fearsome costumes parading through the streets to drive away evil spirits. Key sights include the Church of the Holy Mother of God, which legend says was built in just 38 days in 1834. The old stone bridges spanning the river also lend a nostalgic atmosphere to the village. Shiroka Laka is a well-suited starting point for hikes and is also close to the ski resorts of Pamporovo and Chepelare, making it an attractive destination year-round.
