Rzhava Monastery (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Seven Altars Monastery, often referred to as the Rzhava Monastery, is located at the foot of the Rzhana Mountain in the Iskar Gorge. According to local tradition, it was founded in the 11th century by seven brothers, which gave the monastery its unique name. The main church features a rare architectural layout in the Orthodox world: seven separate altars arranged in the shape of a cross. During the Ottoman period, the monastery served as an important spiritual and cultural center, providing refuge to Bulgarian revolutionaries. Famous Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov frequently visited the site and dedicated some of his works to it. The current complex includes 19th-century residential buildings and a photogenic bell tower. Surrounded by dense forests and steep cliffs, the monastery provides an atmosphere of tranquility and spiritual reflection. It remains an active religious site and a popular destination for hikers exploring the Balkan Mountains.
