Belovo is a town in the Pazardzhik Province, strategically located where the Maritsa River separates the Rila and Rhodope mountain ranges. The town's modern growth was sparked in the 19th century, particularly after the completion of the Constantinople-Belovo railway line by Baron Hirsch in 1873. This railway connection fostered the timber industry and led to the founding of Bulgaria's first paper mill in 1900, which remains an industrial icon of the town. Archaeological surveys nearby have uncovered the ruins of the 6th-century Belovo Basilica, one of the most significant early Christian sites in the region. The surrounding natural landscape provides excellent conditions for mountain tourism and hunting, with the town serving as a gateway to the high peaks of the Rila Mountains. Despite its industrial focus, Belovo preserves a strong connection to its ancient Thracian roots, reflected in local legends and historical sites. Today, it remains an essential transport hub on the main railway artery connecting the capital Sofia with the second-largest city, Plovdiv.
