Kabile Archaeological Site (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Kabile is one of Bulgaria's most significant archaeological sites, located about 10 kilometers from the city of Yambol. Founded by the Thracians in the 2nd millennium BCE, it grew into a major political, economic, and religious center of ancient Thrace. In 341 BCE, the city was conquered by Philip II of Macedon, who transformed it into a formidable fortress. It later served as a royal residence for Thracian kings such as Spartokos and Skostokos. Under Roman rule starting from the 1st century CE, Kabile became a crucial military camp (castra) and a prosperous urban hub. During late antiquity, it evolved into an important episcopal see, evidenced by the ruins of early Christian basilicas. Excavations have revealed extensive city walls, public baths, barracks, and a rock sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Artemis-Hecate on the nearby Zaychi Vrah hill. Today, the site is a national archaeological reserve with a modern museum showcasing thousands of recovered artifacts.
