Bubungan Duabelas (Brunei)

Weather…

Bubungan Duabelas, or the 'House of Twelve Roofs,' is one of the oldest surviving timber buildings in Bandar Seri Begawan and a significant monument of Brunei's colonial era. Built in 1906, it originally served as the official residence for Malcolm McArthur, the first British Resident in Brunei following the signing of the 1906 Supplementary Treaty. The structure is a fine example of architectural adaptation, blending traditional Malay timber construction techniques with British colonial residential styles. Its distinctive multi-tiered roof system, comprising twelve separate sections, was designed to facilitate natural airflow and cooling in the humid tropical climate. Perched on a hill overlooking the Brunei River, it offered the Residents a clear view of Kampong Ayer. For nearly eight decades, it remained the administrative and social hub of British influence in the sultanate until independence in 1984. After restoration, the building was used as a gallery showcasing the historical diplomatic relationship between Brunei and the United Kingdom. It is now preserved as a national heritage site, representing a key chapter in Brunei's 20th-century political history.
