Kota Batu, meaning 'stone fort' or 'stone city', is an area of immense historical significance along the Brunei River. It is believed to have been the site of the early capitals of the Bruneian Empire from the 14th to the 17th centuries. Today, the area is an archaeological park and a cultural hub, preserving the rich history of the sultanate. It is home to two of the country's most important museums: the Brunei Museum, which displays exhibits on Islamic art, archaeology, and ethnography of Brunei, and the Malay Technology Museum, which documents the traditional crafts and industries of the riverine peoples, such as boat-building and metalworking. The Kota Batu archaeological site itself has unearthed remnants of wooden structures, Chinese ceramics, and other artifacts dating back to the empire's era. The area features panoramic views of Kampong Ayer and the modern skyline of Bandar Seri Begawan, connecting the past with the present.
