Kampong Ayer (Brunei)

Weather…

Kampong Ayer, frequently referred to as the 'Venice of the East,' is a historic water settlement located in Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. It comprises a series of interconnected villages built entirely on stilts over the Brunei River, linked by a sprawling network of wooden boardwalks and bridges. The settlement's history dates back over 1,000 years, and it functioned as the primary political and commercial heart of the Bruneian Empire for centuries. In 1521, Antonio Pigafetta, an explorer with Magellan's fleet, documented the scale and sophistication of this aquatic city, which then housed nearly the entire national population. Today, it remains home to approximately 30,000 residents, making it the largest stilt settlement in the world. Despite its traditional appearance, Kampong Ayer is equipped with modern amenities, including schools, mosques, police stations, and a full electrical grid. Residents rely on a high-speed water taxi system for daily commutes between villages and the mainland. As a living cultural monument, Kampong Ayer preserves Brunei's maritime heritage while showcasing a unique way of life adapted to the water.
