Ouro Preto (Brazil)

Weather…

Ouro Preto, formerly known as Vila Rica, is a jewel of Brazilian colonial architecture and served as the epicenter of the 18th-century gold rush in Minas Gerais. Founded in 1711, the city rapidly expanded to become one of the wealthiest and most populous urban centers in the Americas, a prosperity reflected in the magnificent Baroque architecture of its churches and public buildings. Its steep, cobblestone streets are lined with historic residences that testify to the opulence of the era. Ouro Preto was also the stage for the Inconfidência Mineira in 1789, the first significant independence movement against the Portuguese Crown. The sculptor and architect Aleijadinho left behind some of his most profound works here, notably the facades and sculptures of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi. Due to its exceptional historical and cultural significance, Ouro Preto was the first Brazilian site to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. Today, the city remains a vital cultural hub and is home to the Federal University of Ouro Preto, which defines its bustling student life.
