Trancoso in Bahia is the ultimate example of an abandoned village turned into a highly sought-after retreat for the international jet set. Rediscovered by hippies in the 1970s, the village has managed to maintain its rustic, bohemian charm while now hosting some of the most exclusive pousadas and restaurants in Brazil. The absolute heart of Trancoso is the "Quadrado," a large, rectangular grassy town square framed by low-slung colorful houses and a brilliant white 16th-century Jesuit church (Igreja São João Batista) sitting on the cliff's edge. Below the cliffs of the Quadrado lie seemingly endless stretches of palm-fringed sand. Praia dos Nativos and Praia dos Coqueiros are walking distance from the center, offering sophisticated beach clubs and comfortable loungers. For a more secluded experience, visitors can walk south towards Praia de Rio da Barra, where towering red clay cliffs form a dramatic contrast against the turquoise waters and bright sand. The ocean here is warm and inviting year-round. The village square only truly awakens in the late afternoon. By nightfall, lanterns illuminate the mango trees of the Quadrado, and the car-free space transforms into an open-air dining room, often accompanied by the sounds of live music and spontaneous capoeira circles. Access to Trancoso is typically via Porto Seguro airport, followed by an hour's drive. The handy window to experience the town's animated yet relaxed atmosphere is between August and February.
