The Kanye Kgotla is the ceremonial and administrative epicenter of the Bangwaketse, one of Botswana's primary Tswana tribes, located in Kanye, one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the country. Established in the late 18th century, the kgotla has historically hosted vital tribal assemblies, royal coronations, and judicial proceedings presided over by the Kgosi (Paramount Chief). During the colonial era, under the leadership of figures like Bathoen I, Kanye played a critical role in negotiating the British protectorate status that secured the future of Bechuanaland. The kgotla site is characterized by its traditional circular layout and its strategic location on a high plateau that once provided natural fortification. As a site of living heritage, the kgotla remains in active use for community deliberations, symbolizing the enduring stability and social unity of the Bangwaketse people.
