The Moshaweng River is an ephemeral river system in southwestern Botswana, flowing primarily through the Kgalagadi District. It is part of the endorheic Molopo catchment area and drains portions of the southern Kalahari Desert. The river carries water only after exceptionally heavy rainfall events, which may occur only once in several decades. Geomorphologically, the Moshaweng is characterized by a shallow valley, often overgrown with vegetation, categorized as a fossil river system. These valleys, known locally as 'mekgacha,' are important ecological corridors, possessing more nutrient-rich soils than the surrounding sand dunes. Historically, the banks of the Moshaweng served as landmarks for the migrations of the San people and early European explorers. The flora along the watercourse includes acacia species and grasses adapted to extreme dry periods. Despite its rarity as a flowing stream, the Moshaweng is significant for groundwater management in this semi-arid region.

Getting there

Typically accessed via a network of remote, sandy tracks from nearby settlements in the southern Kalahari region. A reliable 4x4 vehicle is usually strictly necessary.

The brief wet season is the only time the riverbed may hold water, but the dry season gives much easier access and driving conditions along the sandy riverbanks.

The environment consists primarily of a wide, sandy dry riverbed flanked by sparse savanna vegetation. The deep, loose sand can make both walking and driving extremely slow.

Essential items include a wide-brimmed hat, high-factor sunscreen, ample drinking water, a reliable GPS device, and vehicle recovery gear for the deep sand tracks.

Informal parking is generally possible along the compacted edges of the dry riverbed or under the limited shade of larger acacia trees scattered in the surrounding area.
