Jwaneng Plateau

The Jwaneng Plateau is a geologically and economically significant upland region in southern Botswana, forming an integral part of the vast Kalahari Basin. Situated at an average elevation of 1190 meters above sea level, the plateau is globally renowned for hosting the Jwaneng diamond mine, widely considered the richest diamond mine in the world by value. The plateau's surface is characterized by deep Kalahari sands that mantle ancient kimberlite pipes formed during the Triassic period, roughly 240 million years ago. Its landscape presents a quintessential semi-arid environment, dominated by scrub savannah, hardy grasses, and scattered acacia trees capable of withstanding prolonged droughts. Since the discovery of diamond deposits in 1972, the plateau has transitioned from a remote pastoral area into a central hub of Botswana's national economy, with the town of Jwaneng serving as a modern mining center. Despite extensive industrial activity, the plateau retains its ecological importance, supporting desert-adapted wildlife such as springbok and ostriches in the vast stretches of wilderness surrounding the mining concessions.
