Misión Jesuítica de San Javier (Bolivia)

Weather…

The San Javier Mission serves as the historic gateway to the Chiquitania region and is the oldest Jesuit mission in Bolivia. Established in 1691, it represents a unique and successful cultural merger between European Baroque design and indigenous artistic traditions. The mission church is an extraordinary feat of timber engineering, featuring enormous hand-carved pillars that support its massive overhanging roof. Inside, visitors experience a warm, ethereal atmosphere created by elaborate wall paintings and exceptional natural acoustics. Under the direction of the Swiss missionary Martin Schmid, the mission became a renowned center for musical instrument making and composition. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains a lively center of local worship.
