Cathedral of La Paz (Bolivia)

Weather…

The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is the principal Catholic church of La Paz, situated on Plaza Murillo adjacent to the Presidential Palace. Construction of the current Neoclassical building began in 1835 on the site of a 17th-century church that had fallen into ruin. Due to financial difficulties and political instability, the project took nearly a century to complete, with the final inauguration occurring in 1925 during the republic's centennial celebrations. The architecture features monumental Corinthian columns on the facade and two massive bell towers. The interior is characterized by its simplicity and grand scale, with high vaults and stained glass windows imported from Germany. A notable feature of the cathedral is the tomb of Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz, a key figure in Bolivian history, whose remains were repatriated from France in 1965. The cathedral stands as a symbol of both religious faith and the enduring strength of the Bolivian state.
