The Scheldt (Escaut in French) is one of the most vital waterways in Western Europe, holding enormous economic and historical significance for Belgium. The approximately 350-kilometer-long river originates in northern France, winds through Flanders, and finally flows into the North Sea in the Netherlands. Along its Belgian journey, the Scheldt passes through major cities such as Tournai, Ghent, and most notably, Antwerp. In Antwerp, the river widens into a massive estuary that hosts the second-largest seaport in Europe, forming the logistical heart of the country. A unique feature of the Scheldt is the strong tidal influence that extends far inland, creating a unique ecology characterized by freshwater mudflats and salt marshes. The riverbanks are dotted with numerous historical fortresses and scenic landscapes that are highly popular among cyclists and hikers.
