Mortsel is a city in the province of Antwerp known for its extremely high population density, which is among the highest in Belgium. Strategically located south of Antwerp, the city is a major transport hub with numerous tram and rail connections. Historically, Mortsel is inseparable from the Agfa-Gevaert company, whose headquarters and factories have shaped the urban landscape and local economy for over a century. A tragic event in the city's history was the Allied bombing on April 5, 1943, which was intended to hit the Agfa works but instead destroyed the city center, resulting in over 900 civilian casualties. Today, a memorial commemorates this dark hour. A significant landmark is Fort IV, one of the fortifications of the historic defense belt around Antwerp, now serving as a park and cultural center. Despite its compactness, the city features a variety of shopping opportunities and cultural institutions. In recent years, projects for traffic calming and the creation of new green spaces have been implemented to increase the quality of life in the densely built city.
