Hesbaye Plateau (Belgium)

Weather…

The Hesbaye Plateau, known in Dutch as Haspengouw, is an extensive loess region in eastern Belgium, spanning the provinces of Limburg, Liège, and Walloon Brabant. It is recognized as one of the most fertile areas in Northwestern Europe, characterized by a loess mantle that reaches thicknesses of up to 20 meters. Geographically, it is split into 'Dry Hesbaye' to the south and 'Wet Hesbaye' to the north, the latter being rich in natural springs and small watercourses. Historically, Hesbaye was a core territory of the Frankish Empire, and it is dotted with medieval castles, ancient abbeys, and distinctive square-shaped farmsteads. Today, the region is Belgium's premier fruit-growing district, famous for its vast orchards of apples, pears, and cherries. The annual spring blossom season is a major tourist draw, turning the rolling landscape into a sea of white and pink flowers. With elevations between 80 and 150 meters, the plateau's gentle slopes are also increasingly used for viticulture, producing high-quality wines on its lime-rich subsoils.
