Abbey of Sint-Truiden (Belgium)

Weather…

The Abbey of Sint-Truiden was established in 655 by Saint Trudo and evolved into one of the most powerful Benedictine monasteries in the Low Countries. Throughout the Middle Ages, it functioned as a major pilgrimage site where believers sought intercession at the tomb of its founder, driving the growth of the surrounding settlement. The most prominent architectural feature today is the massive Romanesque tower dating back to the 11th century, which remains a skyline landmark despite several devastating fires throughout history. Below the surface, the abbey's crypt reveals archaeological remains of successive building phases and rare medieval mural fragments. Following the French Revolution in 1798, the monastic community was forcibly dissolved and much of the grand abbey church was systematically dismantled. Today, the site is preserved as a cultural heritage center, housing an academy while offering a unique glimpse into the early Christianization of the Hesbaye region.
