Herentals is a pleasant historic city in the province of Antwerp and is considered the historic capital of the Kempen region. The city has well preserved its medieval structure and impresses with its central Grote Markt, featuring the magnificent 15th-century Cloth Hall (Lakenhal) crowned by a slender belfry that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Herentals looks back on a long tradition in the cloth trade and shoe manufacturing. In addition to its historical significance, the city is today primarily known as a green and sporty oasis; the extensive pine forests, especially the Peertsbos nature reserve, invite visitors to cycle and hike. Herentals is also an important transport hub for inland waterway vessels, strategically located at the intersection of the Albert Canal and the Bocholt-Herentals Canal.
