Campine (Kempen) (Belgium)

Weather…

The Campine, or Kempen in Dutch, is an extensive natural region in northeastern Belgium and the southern Netherlands. It is defined by its sandy soil, deposited by winds during the Pleistocene, which originally supported a landscape of vast heathlands, bogs, and oak forests. In the 19th and 20th centuries, massive reforestation with pine trees transformed the region to supply timber for the booming coal industry. The topography is relatively low-lying, with elevations ranging from 10 to 50 meters above sea level. A turning point in its history was the discovery of coal in 1901 by André Dumont, leading to the rapid development of mining towns in the province of Limburg. Today, the region is home to the Hoge Kempen National Park, Belgium's first national park, which preserves the unique biodiversity of the dry heath and woodland. The Campine is also an industrial hub for glass production and nuclear research (SCK CEN in Mol). Its extensive cycle path network, including the famous 'Cycling through Water' path, makes it a popular destination for eco-tourism.
