De Zegge Nature Reserve (Belgium)

Weather…

The De Zegge Nature Reserve in Geel is an ecological crown jewel, standing as one of the last pristine remnants of the historic, once-massive Geel marshland (Geels Gebroekt) in the Campine region. Covering nearly 100 hectares, this strictly protected fenland is uniquely owned and managed by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp (KMDA), which purchased the land back in 1952, effectively establishing Belgium's very first private nature reserve. The landscape is a dense, archaic labyrinth of impenetrable reed beds, waterlogged peat bogs, muddy alder carrs, and open pools of dark water. This inherent inaccessibility makes De Zegge an indispensable sanctuary for extremely rare, disturbance-sensitive wildlife, most notably harboring a critical population of the endangered European pond turtle and rare marsh butterflies. The acidic, nutrient-poor bog soils also support fascinating carnivorous flora like the round-leaved sundew. To rigorously protect this highly fragile relic of untamed nature, free public access is strictly prohibited; the reserve can only be explored through carefully managed, guided educational excursions.

🌅
Best time of day
Visiting during the early morning provides the clearest views of the marshland habitats and the most active periods for the local bird species calling in the reeds.
📜
Etiquette
Access is typically restricted and may require a guided tour or prior permission from the managing zoological society to ensure the preservation of this fragile remnant.
🎒
What to bring
Since it is a wet environment, sturdy waterproof boots are indispensable, and taking a camera with a telephoto lens can help capture wildlife without getting too close.
🧭
Getting there
Be sure to check current visiting arrangements in advance, as specialized natural reserves often have specific entry points and limited public parking available.
🦌
What to expect
Marshland observation requires remaining stationary and quiet for extended periods; find a good vantage point over the reeds and let the wildlife slowly emerge.
