Forest of Soignes (Belgium)

Weather…

The Sonian Forest (Forêt de Soignes) is the green lung of central Belgium, stretching across the three regions of Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. Spanning over 4,400 hectares, the forest is primarily famous for its monumental beech trees, some of which are over 200 years old, earning it the nickname 'The Beech Cathedral.' In 2017, significant parts of the forest were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the 'Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.' Historically, the forest served as a hunting ground for the Dukes of Brabant and Holy Roman Emperors, which played a crucial role in its long-term preservation. Today, it remains a vital sanctuary for biodiversity, hosting roe deer, foxes, and over 1,000 species of fungi. An advanced system of wildlife crossings (ecoducts) has been implemented to reconnect forest sections fragmented by major roads, ensuring safe passage for animals. For the inhabitants of the Brussels metropolitan area, the forest is an indispensable recreational space offering extensive hiking, cycling, and horse-riding paths.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The forest is effortlessly reached using the Brussels public transport system, including trams and suburban trains. Multiple well-marked entrance gates are located directly on the outskirts of the capital region.
📅
Best season
Autumn is exceptionally remarkable when the towering beech cathedrals turn animated shades of gold and copper. Spring brings a fresh green canopy, while summers remain pleasantly cool beneath the dense ancient trees.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of expansive, wide forest avenues and narrower dirt trails with very gentle undulations. The paths are generally broad and heavily compacted, making walking quite comfortable in most areas.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight trainers are completely adequate for the main compacted avenues. A light rain jacket is recommended year-round, as the dense forest canopy can hold substantial moisture.
🅿️
Parking
Several large, designated parking lots operate at the main peripheral entry points, such as near the local hippodrome. Spaces can fill up remarkably fast on sunny weekend afternoons, so arriving early is highly advised.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors should always respect designated conservation zones to protect the delicate flora and ground-nesting wildlife. Beware of sharing paths with fast-moving mountain bikers and horse riders on designated multi-use trails.
⏱️
Time needed
A brisk, refreshing walk through the ancient beech stands typically lasts between one and two hours. Exploring the deeper forest network and crossing into different regional borders can effortlessly consume a half-day.
