Cassel Hill
Cassel Hill (Mont Cassel) is a prominent witness hill in the historic region of French Flanders, near the Belgian border, belonging geographically to the chain of Flemish Hills. Rising to an altitude of about 176 meters, it significantly overtops the surrounding flat plain, offering strategic views over the Houtland region towards the North Sea. Geologically, the hill consists of Tertiary clay layers protected by a harder cap of ironstone or sandstone, which prevented it from being eroded away. Historically, Cassel was known as a vital transportation hub as early as the Roman era and served as the seat of an important castellany during the Middle Ages. During the World Wars, the elevation held immense military significance for observing the front lines. Today, the town of Cassel is famous for its rich Flemish cultural heritage and traditional windmills. The hill range, which also includes the Belgian Kemmelberg, marks an ecologically valuable zone with a mix of woodlands and pastures.
