Wormhout is a town located in the heart of French Flanders, within the Nord department, and serves as a bastion of Flemish culture in northern France. The town is characterized by its distinct architecture featuring yellow and red bricks, typical of the region between Dunkirk and Lille. A prominent landmark is the Moulin de la Descente, a beautifully preserved traditional windmill that stands as a symbol of the town's agricultural roots. Wormhout gained tragic historical significance due to the 1940 massacre, where British and French soldiers were killed by SS forces during the Battle of Dunkirk; the La Plaine au Bois memorial site now honors their memory. Geographically, the town is set in the flat, fertile landscape of the Flanders plain, crossed by numerous canals and farmland. Today, the economy is supported by a mix of agriculture, local crafts, and services. Culturally, Wormhout is lively, known for its carnival traditions, traditional giants, and regional gastronomy. The Saint-Martin church, a classic Flemish hall church, remains the community's spiritual and architectural centerpiece. Its strategic location and rich heritage make it a key stop for those exploring the Franco-Flemish borderlands.
