Jidda (Bahrain)

Weather…

Jidda Island, situated off the western coast of Bahrain near the Umm al-Nassan causeway, is a unique geographical feature characterized by its vertical limestone cliffs. Unlike many of the low-lying sandy islands in the Persian Gulf, Jidda's rugged terrain made it a natural fortress, leading to its historical use as a high-security penal colony where prisoners labored in the quarries. In addition to its role as a prison, the island functioned as a vital source of building material during the Dilmun civilization; the durable limestone extracted here was used to construct monumental structures like the Barbar Temple. Currently a private retreat, the island's striking silhouette serves as a landmark for travelers on the King Fahd Causeway. It remains a testament to the region's ancient industrial history and its diverse geological makeup, standing as one of the few places in the archipelago where natural stone dominates the coastline.
