Sanahin Monastery (Armenia)

Weather…

Sanahin Monastery is a prominent complex in the Lori Province, established in 966 by Queen Khosrovanush of the Bagratid dynasty. Along with Haghpat, it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, representing the pinnacle of Armenian religious architecture between the 10th and 13th centuries. The name Sanahin translates to 'this one is older than that one,' asserting its seniority over the nearby Haghpat Monastery. The site consists of several churches, including the Surb Astvatsatsin and the Amenaprkich Cathedral, as well as a scriptorium and a high-status academy. During the Middle Ages, Sanahin was a renowned university where students studied humanities, medicine, and sciences under leading scholars. The monastery also served as the ancestral burial place for the Zakarian princes, whose elaborate tombs and khachkars are found within the complex. Its architecture is noted for the integration of defensive features and sophisticated stone masonry that has survived centuries of seismic activity.
