The Punta Bermeja nature reserve, in the province of Río Negro, is primarily known for its large colony of maned sea lions, one of the largest on the Patagonian mainland. Throughout the year, thousands of sea lions can be seen basking on the beaches, breeding, and raising their young. An interpretation center and a series of elevated walkways allow visitors to observe the animals from a safe distance without disturbing them. In addition to the sea lions, the area is also an important habitat for seabirds such as cormorants and oystercatchers. Punta Bermeja has an impressive natural spectacle and is an important center for the research and conservation of marine life on the Patagonian coast.

Best time of day
Visiting during the mid-morning to early afternoon hours is often the best time to see the sea lions actively sunbathing. The natural light during these hours also provides fantastic conditions for expansive coastal photography.
Etiquette
For the absolute safety of both the marine animals and visitors, you must remain on the designated viewing platforms at the top of the high cliffs. Descending to the beach and approaching the colony is strictly forbidden.
What to bring
Because the observation points are situated high above the shore, a strong pair of binoculars or a spotting scope is highly recommended. A warm, windproof jacket is also crucial, as coastal winds can be remarkably intense.
Getting there
The reserve is usually reachable via well-maintained provincial roads leading directly to the visitor center parking area. From there, short and clearly marked trails guide you to the various panoramic cliff viewpoints.
What to expect
While the colony is massive, identifying individual behaviors like nursing pups or territorial disputes takes a bit of time. Focus your gaze on a specific group and patiently watch their interactions unfold on the beach below.
