Cafunfo is a mining town located in the Cuango municipality of Lunda Norte province in northeastern Angola. The town is primarily famous for its rich alluvial diamond deposits along the Cuango River, which have been exploited since colonial times. Cafunfo gained international notoriety during the Angolan Civil War as a frequent site of intense fighting and kidnappings of foreign mining personnel, as control over the diamond fields was critical for financing military operations. The region's geography is characterized by dense forests and numerous waterways where diamonds are found in river sediments. The local economy is almost entirely centered on legal and often artisanal diamond trading, while social infrastructure like healthcare and education frequently faces developmental gaps. In recent years, the government has increased efforts to formalize the sector and protect the rights of small-scale miners, known as garimpeiros. The town remains a focal point of economic ambition and social complexity within the Angolan hinterland.
