Luando Hunting Reserve (Angola)

Weather…

The Luando Hunting Reserve, located in the Malanje province of northern Angola, is world-renowned as the primary sanctuary for the Giant Sable Antelope (Palanca Negra Gigante), a national symbol of the country. Spanning over 8,000 square kilometers, the reserve is bounded by the Luando and Cuanza rivers, which serve as natural barriers and essential water sources for the resident wildlife. The protected area was established in the 1930s to preserve the unique Miombo woodlands and open grasslands characteristic of the region. During the long civil war, the reserve was largely inaccessible, making research on the rare antelope species nearly impossible; however, since 2002, intensive conservation and recovery projects have been underway. The landscape is defined by vast savannas, gallery forests along the riverbanks, and immense biodiversity, including buffaloes and numerous bird species. The reserve plays a central role in Angolan identity and is today a focus of international conservation efforts to prevent the extinction of the Giant Sable Antelope.
