Little Fort of Kikombo (Angola)

Weather…

The Little Fort of Kikombo, also known as Fortim do Kikombo, is located in Kwanza Sul Province and is one of the smallest yet most historically significant fortifications in Angola. It was constructed by the Portuguese between 1645 and 1648 to serve as a support base during the reconquest of Luanda from the Dutch. Kikombo Bay provided a natural harbor used for troop landings and receiving supplies from Brazil. The architecture is simple and functional, consisting of a small rectangular structure with bastions at its corners. Beyond its military role, Kikombo was a notable site for the slave trade, serving as an embarkation point for many captives being sent across the Atlantic. Today, the fort's walls are partially in ruins, yet they stand as silent witnesses to the maritime history and strategic struggles along the Angolan coast in the 17th century.
