Cuangar Border Post (Angola)

Weather…

The Cuangar border post in Cuando Cubango Province gained notoriety during World War I due to a significant military incident. On October 31, 1914, German troops from German South West Africa attacked the Portuguese post, even though Portugal was officially neutral at the time. During the attack led by Major Viktor Franke, nearly all Portuguese defenders were killed, leading to an escalation of tensions in the region. The fort is strategically located on the banks of the Okavango River and originally served to secure the border with what is now Namibia. Today, ruins and a memorial stone commemorate the victims of this battle and mark an important point in Angolan military history. The site is a silent witness to the effects of European colonial conflicts on African soil and is viewed by historians as a precursor to Portugal's official entry into the war.
