Nkurenkuru is the capital of the Kavango West Region in northern Namibia, situated picturesquely on the southern banks of the Okavango River. Historically, the site became a significant mission station for the Finnish Missionary Society in 1890, which shaped the early development of local education and healthcare. Until 1936, Nkurenkuru served as the regional administrative headquarters before the role was moved to Rundu. With the creation of the Kavango West Region in 2013, the town regained its status as an administrative capital. Today, the economy is driven by government services, retail, and river-based activities like fishing. Geographically, the town is characterized by fertile riverside vegetation and its position directly across from the Angolan town of Cuangar. Nkurenkuru remains a cultural heartland for the Kwangali people, blending traditional heritage with modern urban expansion.
