Cuito Cuanavale Battlefield (Angola)

Weather…

The Cuito Cuanavale Battlefield in Cuando Cubango Province is a historical site of continental significance. Between 1987 and 1988, it hosted the largest tank battle on African soil, often referred to as the 'Stalingrad of Africa.' The conflict involved Angolan government forces (FAPLA) with Cuban support against UNITA rebels and the South African military. The battle's outcome is considered a decisive turning point in Southern African history, as it forced the withdrawal of South African troops from Angola and paved the way for Namibia's independence and the eventual end of the Apartheid regime. Today, an imposing monument and a museum commemorate the victims and the strategic importance of this location. The site includes preserved trenches, destroyed military hardware, and memorials that document the sheer intensity of the fighting.
