Lobito Railway Monument (Angola)

Weather…

The Lobito Railway Monument commemorates the construction and enormous economic significance of the Caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CFB), one of Africa's most important railway lines. The railway line was begun in the early 20th century under the leadership of British visionary Sir Robert Williams, with the goal of connecting the copper mines of Katanga with the Atlantic port of Lobito. The monument stands in Lobito, the starting point of the 1,344-kilometer route that runs through the entire heart of Angola to the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The construction was a technical masterpiece requiring thousands of workers and immense resources, and was completed in 1929. For decades, the CFB was the backbone of the Angolan economy and a symbol of progress and continental connectivity. Today, the monument recalls the railway's glory days and its reconstruction following the civil war.
