Baía Azul, located about 20 kilometers south of Benguela, is considered one of Angola's premier beach destinations. The bay gets its name from the striking deep blue color of the Atlantic Ocean in this specific area. Visitors come here primarily for relaxation, swimming, and enjoying the expansive 3-kilometer sandy crescent. The beach is flanked by rugged desert cliffs, creating a strong visual contrast. Local infrastructure has improved, offering several beachfront lodges and restaurants serving fresh seafood, including the regional specialty, grilled cacuso (tilapia) and lobster. The area is popular among both locals from Benguela and international tourists seeking a safe, easy on the eye swimming spot. Reaching Baía Azul is straightforward via a paved road from Benguela, taking about 30 minutes by car. The best time to visit is during the dry season (Cacimbo) from May to September, when temperatures are milder and rain is practically nonexistent, making it convenient for beach activities.
