Balombo is a significant town and municipality located in the northeastern hinterland of Benguela Province, Angola. The region lies within a mountainous transitional zone leading to the central highlands and is noted for its humid and cool climate. Historically, Balombo was known during the colonial era as Vila Norton de Matos and emerged as a vital agricultural hub. The town's economy is primarily centered on the production of coffee, bananas, and potatoes, as well as livestock farming. Lush vegetation and fertile soils establish Balombo as one of the 'breadbaskets' of the Benguela Province. The town's architecture still displays remnants of colonial urban planning, characterized by wide avenues and administrative buildings. Following the end of the civil conflict, Balombo became an important center for the resettlement of displaced populations. Its location along the EN-260 highway facilitates trade with the neighboring provinces of Huambo and Cuanza Sul. Balombo remains a symbol of the agricultural potential and natural beauty of the Angolan interior.
