Tigzirt
Located in the easy on the eye Kabylia region, Tigzirt is an appealing little coastal town on the Mediterranean Sea, about 120 kilometers east of Algiers. The town's name means 'The Island' in the Berber language, referring to a small offshore islet. The combination of the Mediterranean coastline, green hills, and rich history attracts visitors seeking tranquility and culture away from the large cities. History enthusiasts will find Tigzirt highly rewarding, as the town was built directly over the remains of the ancient Roman city of Iomnium. Travelers can walk freely through the archaeological excavations, which include the columns of an early Christian basilica and the ruins of a temple. Besides its history, Tigzirt gives beautiful small coves and a well-maintained harbor that invites leisurely walks in the late afternoon. In the welcoming harbor restaurants, guests can enjoy excellent seafood and traditional Kabyle dishes, often prepared with regional olive oil. The town can be reached by car from Tizi Ouzou via winding but well-maintained roads. The convenient time to visit Tigzirt is during the summer months for beachgoers, while spring and early autumn are well-suited for historical explorations in mild weather.
