Venetian Triangular Castle (Albania)

Weather…

The Venetian Triangular Castle is located on the banks of the Vivari Channel, directly opposite the ancient city of Butrint in southern Albania. It was built by the Venetians in the late 15th or early 16th century to safeguard the channel's lucrative fishing grounds and the entrance to Lake Butrint from Ottoman incursions. As its name implies, the fortress features a unique triangular layout, reinforced with round towers at each of its three corners. During the rule of Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the early 19th century, the castle was further strengthened and used as a military garrison. Its strategic location allowed for complete control over maritime traffic between the Ionian Sea and the inland lake. Today, the castle is an integral part of the Butrint UNESCO World Heritage site and is accessible to visitors via a small, hand-operated cable ferry. The well-preserved masonry and towers stand as a testament to the region's complex history under Venetian and Ottoman influence.
