Durrës Railway Hub (Albania)

Weather…

The Durrës Railway Hub is the historical and operational heart of the Albanian rail network. It was established following World War II as the starting point of the nation's first railway line to Peqin, connecting Albania's largest port with the interior. Durrës hosts the central station as well as the main maintenance workshops and depots of the national railway company, Hekurudha Shqiptare (HSH). For decades, rail transport served as the backbone of freight logistics, particularly for ores and industrial goods. After a prolonged period of neglect and technological stagnation, the hub is currently the focus of major international modernization initiatives. The rehabilitation of the Durrës-Tirana line and the construction of a rail link to the airport are key components of the current national infrastructure strategy. As part of Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII, the Durrës hub is fundamentally important for Albania's future economic connectivity with neighboring Balkan nations.
