The Shomali Plain, a broad and fertile plateau located north of Kabul, is one of Afghanistan's most important agricultural heartlands. Its name translates to the 'Northern Plain.' Flanked by the Hindu Kush mountains, the plain is historically renowned for its vineyards, which produce high-quality table grapes that are famous throughout the region. Its strategic location on the main highway connecting Kabul to northern Afghanistan has made it a contested area throughout history. During the civil war of the 1990s, the plain was subjected to a scorched-earth campaign by the Taliban, who destroyed irrigation systems and burned vineyards. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to rehabilitate the area's agriculture and restore the plain to its former productivity.
