The Sentinel Copper Mine is located in the Kalumbila District of Zambia's North-Western Province and represents one of the most significant greenfield investments in the nation's modern mining history. Developed by First Quantum Minerals, the mine was commissioned in 2015 following a massive capital investment of approximately 2.1 billion USD. Sentinel is a large-scale open-pit operation featuring one of the world's most advanced processing plants, designed for an annual output capacity of 300,000 tonnes of copper. The project encompassed more than just the mine, involving the establishment of the new town of Kalumbila and extensive infrastructure development, including roads and power lines. Due to the relatively low copper grades in the ore body, the mine relies on high-efficiency, large-volume processing technologies to ensure commercial viability. Sentinel is a cornerstone of Zambia's strategy to expand mining activities beyond the traditional Copperbelt region. The operation contributes substantially to Zambia's GDP and provides direct employment for thousands of residents.
