The Hawf Protected Area is located in the far east of Yemen on the border with Oman and hosts one of the rarest ecosystems on the Arabian Peninsula. It is famous for its seasonal mist forest, which develops during the monsoon (Khareef) between July and September, transforming the arid region into a lush green paradise. The dense forests consist of a variety of tree species, including acacias and dragon trees, that thrive in the humid microclimate. Hawf is considered a sanctuary for rare animals such as the Arabian leopard and various species of hyenas. The biological diversity is exceptionally high, with hundreds of plant species, many of which have medicinal significance. Due to its transboundary location, the area also serves as an important ecological link to the Dhofar Mountains in Oman. Despite political challenges in the country, Hawf remains a critical center for nature conservation in the region.

Getting there
The protected area is typically accessed via the coastal road from Al Ghaydah in the Al Mahrah governorate, heading east towards the border. Hiring a local driver with a sturdy 4x4 vehicle is usually the most practical approach.
Best season
The absolute best time to visit is during the khareef (monsoon) season, usually from late June to September, when the mountains turn lush green. Outside this period, the area is noticeably drier and loses its dense tropical feel.
Terrain & paths
The environment transitions from coastal plains to steep, misty mountainsides covered in dense vegetation during the wet season. Hiking paths can be muddy, slippery, and overgrown, requiring careful navigation through the forest.
What to bring
Waterproof clothing and shoes with aggressive tread are highly recommended if visiting during the humid monsoon months. Insect repellent, lightweight long layers, and a reliable waterproof bag for electronics are also typical necessities.
Parking
Vehicles are generally left at designated clearings near the main entrances or alongside the access roads leading up the mountain. Formal, structured parking facilities are practically non-existent in this natural landscape.
Safety
Driving on the mountain roads during dense fog and heavy rain demands extreme caution due to poor visibility and potential landslides. Visitors must stay aware of regional security updates and strictly travel with trusted guides.
Time needed
Exploring the lush lower sections and taking in the panoramic coastal views usually takes at least half a day. Dedicated nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers often spend a full day hiking deeper into the protected zone.
