Shaharah Bridge (Yemen)

Weather…

The Shaharah Bridge is a marvel of early 20th-century Yemeni engineering, spanning a deep gorge between two mountains in the northern part of the country. Built in 1905 by a local master mason named Saleh al-Yaman, the bridge was designed to connect the mountain villages of Jabal al-Amir and Jabal al-Faysh, which were previously accessible only via treacherous paths. The bridge is constructed entirely from limestone, erected without modern machinery using traditional stone-cutting techniques. It is approximately 20 meters long and suspended at a dizzying height of 200 meters above the valley floor. According to local lore, the bridge was strategically designed to be easily collapsed in the event of an invasion, thereby isolating the village of Shaharah from attackers. Today, it serves as a powerful symbol of Yemeni ingenuity and mountain resilience, attracting admirers of historic architecture despite its remote location.
