Shaharah Bridge (Yemen)

Weather…

The Shaharah Bridge is a spectacular example of 17th-century Yemeni engineering and masonry. It spans a 200-meter deep limestone gorge, connecting the two mountain villages of Jabal al-Amir and Jabal al-Faish in northern Yemen. The bridge was constructed using precisely cut limestone blocks and measures approximately 20 meters in length and 3 meters in width. Local tradition states it was built to provide the residents of the fortified village of Shaharah with a strategic escape route and a means of defense, as the bridge could theoretically be dismantled quickly in the event of an invasion. The structure blends seamlessly into the rugged, vertical mountain landscape and is regarded as one of the most photographed landmarks in the country. Achieving such a feat of construction in such an extreme location without modern tools remains a subject of awe for architects today. Despite its age, the bridge remains structurally sound and continues to be used by local villagers as a primary footbridge.
