Long Tan Cross (Vietnam)

Weather…

The Long Tan Cross is a significant memorial in Đồng Nai Province that commemorates the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War. On August 18, 1966, 108 soldiers of the Australian Army encountered a much larger force of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army troops, estimated at up to 2,500 men, in a rubber plantation. Despite heavy monsoon rain and a shortage of ammunition, the Australian soldiers held their ground under extreme conditions and successfully repelled the attack. The original concrete cross was erected in 1969 by Australian engineers to honor the 18 comrades killed in the action. After the war, the cross was removed but later replaced by a replica, which today stands as one of the few officially recognized foreign memorials in Vietnam. For many Australians and New Zealanders, Long Tan is a sacred site of remembrance and a symbol of courage and mateship under fire. The site is regularly visited by veterans and families to pay their respects to those who fought and died in the battle.
