Cần Giờ Mangrove Forest is a remarkable feature of the geography and culture of Vietnam. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. It is a vast wetland that was destroyed during the war and later reforested. Known as the 'green lung' of Ho Chi Minh City. Protects the city from storms. Home to a large population of saltwater crocodiles and monkeys. This natural area reflects the scenic diversity of Vietnam, from Ha Long Bay to the iconic rice terraces. Like many notable places in Vietnam, it combines regional character with the legacy of a millennia-old civilization and the French colonial era. 📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The biosphere reserve is located south of Ho Chi Minh City and can be reached in about two hours by bus or scooter. The journey typically includes a brief but essential ride on the Binh Khanh ferry to safely cross the river into Cần Giờ.
📅
Best season
The dry season from December to April is convenient as the risk of heavy rainfall is minimal, making boat tours far more pleasant. During the intense monsoon season, frequent flooding can severely restrict access to certain delicate mangrove areas.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of a dense network of muddy tidal flats, saltwater swamps, and winding natural waterways. Movement is mostly facilitated via wooden boardwalks, suspension bridges, or during organized guided excursions in small river boats.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, sun-protective clothing and abundant mosquito repellent are absolutely necessary in the humid climate of the mangroves. Comfortable footwear for the wooden walkways and binoculars for bird and monkey watching complete the optimal gear.
🅿️
Parking
In the main tourist centers, such as the Vam Sat Eco Park and at boat tour docks, there are organized, supervised parking areas available. A small fee is frequently charged for the safe and secure parking of scooters or private cars.
⚠️
Safety
The macaques living in the forests can be quite aggressive; it is crucial to stow belongings securely and strictly refrain from feeding them. When exploring on the water, life jackets should always be worn and the guide's instructions closely followed.
⏱️
Time needed
A classic day trip is usually perfectly sufficient to see the main attractions like the bat lagoon, the bird sanctuary, and the crocodile farm. Visitors wanting to experience the atmosphere more intensely can also opt to stay at nearby eco-resorts.
