Côn Đảo Prison (Vietnam)

Weather…

The Côn Đảo Prison on Côn Sơn Island was considered one of Southeast Asia's most feared penal institutions for over a century, often referred to as 'hell on earth.' Established in 1862 by the French colonial power, it served to incarcerate and torture political prisoners and Vietnamese nationalists. Following the French departure, the South Vietnamese regime, with U.S. support, continued to use the facility to hold dissidents under inhumane conditions. Particularly infamous were the so-called 'tiger cages,' extremely narrow concrete cells without roofs where prisoners were mistreated and exposed to the elements. Among the most famous prisoners was the national heroine Võ Thị Sáu, who was executed here at the age of 19. After the reunification of Vietnam in 1975, the prison was closed and converted into a national historic site. Today, the preserved cells and the onsite museum serve as a stark reminder of the dark chapters of colonial history and the sacrificial struggle for independence.
