Cuc Phuong National Park, located in Ninh Binh Province, holds the distinction of being Vietnam's first national park, established in 1962. Getting there
Located a two-hour drive south of Hanoi, the park is very accessible by private car or tourist shuttle. Most visitors navigate from nearby Ninh Binh, easily hiring a motorcycle or taxi to the main gates.
Best season
The dry season from December to April features the most pleasant temperatures and manageable walking conditions. Late April to early May is particularly popular as thousands of lively butterflies suddenly emerge.
Terrain & paths
The terrain features striking karst limestone mountains covered in ancient rainforest, hiding deep cave systems. Trails vary from flat paved paths near centers to steep, slippery, rugged primary forest tracks.
What to bring
Waterproof hiking boots are essential, as the forest floor can be notoriously muddy and filled with leeches. Long trousers, highly effective insect repellent, a strong flashlight, and light rain gear are advised.
Parking
Ample, secure parking is usually available directly at the park's main entrance gate and near animal rescue centers inside. From there, visitors can hike or use local park transport to venture further deep inside.
Safety
To prevent leech bites, wear specifically designed leech socks or securely tuck your long trousers into your boots. Always stay on well-trodden paths to avoid getting lost, and beware slippery rocks near caves.
Time needed
A fast-paced full-day trip from Hanoi allows time to see main rescue centers and complete one short hike. However, staying overnight near the park is highly recommended to enjoy morning bird watching and longer trails.
