Bear Sanctuary Ninh Bình (Vietnam)

Weather…

The Bear Sanctuary Ninh Bình was opened in 2017 by the international animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS and is located in Kỳ Phú commune, Nho Quan district. The approximately 10-hectare facility serves as a refuge for Asiatic black bears and sun bears rescued from the illegal bile farming industry or wildlife trade. The sanctuary provides the animals with spacious outdoor enclosures featuring natural elements such as ponds, climbing structures, and caves to encourage their natural behavior. The complex includes a modern veterinary clinic, a food preparation kitchen, and quarantine stations for newly arrived bears. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via an elevated walkway that allows for disturbance-free observation of the animals without directly entering their habitat. The project's goal is to raise awareness for species conservation in Vietnam and to end the suffering of bile bears for good. It is one of the most modern sanctuaries of its kind in Southeast Asia and works closely with local authorities.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The sanctuary is suitable for visiting year-round, but the dry season from November to April gives more comfortable conditions for walking the grounds. During the wet months, frequent heavy rains might occasionally force the rescued bears to stay in their indoor enclosures.
🌅
Best time of day
Bears are typically most active during the early morning hours before the midday tropical heat sets in, making this the best time to see them foraging and playing. Late afternoons can also provide excellent opportunities as temperatures begin to cool down slightly.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors are required to maintain a respectful, quiet demeanor so as not to stress the recovering bears, many of which have suffered profound past trauma. Do not attempt to throw food into the enclosures or lean over the safety barriers provided.
🎒
What to bring
Wear comfortable, lightweight walking shoes suitable for exploring the sanctuary's paved and unpaved viewing paths in a tropical climate. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and insect repellent are highly recommended to protect against the elements during your visit.
🧭
Getting there
The sanctuary is located just a short drive from popular tourist spots in Ninh Binh and can be easily reached by taxi or rented motorbike. Signage is typically well-maintained along the main routes leading directly to the visitor center parking area.
🦌
What to expect
These animals are allowed to roam large semi-wild enclosures at their own pace, meaning they might occasionally hide in dense vegetation or take long naps. Enjoy the informative displays at the visitor center while you patiently wait for them to emerge into plain view.
